"Since it first began more than a decade ago, Paris Photo has won recognition as the world’s premier fair for still photography. This unique event offers a panorama of fine art photography from its early days to the present day, and presents a forward-looking overview of global trends and expressions available in this medium." – from the Paris Photo website

And indeed it is what it says it is, a show, an event, a fair with some of the finest vintage and contemporary photography on display. With Japan as the guest of honour it was the first time for Paris Photo to pay special attention to the far east and its rich heritage in fine art photography. A good sign and a step into a very important direction as it might pave the way for a show focusing on Chinese contemporary photography.

I talked to many gallery directors, curators and collectors and they are all full of praise for the fantastic organization, support, press coverage and the very knowledgeable crowd of visitors from all over the world. If you’re into photography as a form of art, be it as a professional, collector, connoisseur or student, there is no way around Paris Photo. And last but not least it is in Paris…

Two photography auctions were held in London at Sotheby’s (May, 13th) and Christie’s (May, 15th).
While the interest in the auctions was good, the auction results themselves were moderate with most of the art works under the hammer selling within or below the estimates of the auction houses. A few noteworthy exceptions (among others) were prints from:

Henri-Cartier Bresson
"Barrio Chino, Barcelona" from 1933, sold at 30.000 Pounds, est. 8-12.000 Pounds (Sotheby’s)

Florence Henri
"Compostion (bobbins and mirrors)" from 1928, sold at 20.000 Pounds, est. 4-6.000 Pounds (Christie’s)

Hugo Erfurth
"Marc and Bella Chagall" from 1923, sold at 17.000 Pounds, est. 3-5.000 Pounds (Christie’s)
"Oskar Kokoschka" from 1920, sold at 20.000 Pounds, est. 8-12.000 Pounds (Christie’s)

Robert Mapplethorpe
"Hermes", from 1988, sold at 28.000 Pounds, est. 12-18.000 Pounds (Sotheby’s)

David Lachapelle
"Jesus is my homeboy (the last supper)", from 2003, sold at 19.000 Pounds, est. 7.5-10.000 Pounds (Sotheby’s)

Helen Levitt
"New York" from 1980, sold at 11.000 Pounds, est. 4-6.000 pounds (Sotheby’s)

The best selling single print was "Satiric Dancer, Paris" from 1926 by André Kertész. This vintage print was sold for 190.000 Pounds. A substantial offer of Japanese prints (Christie’s) seemed mostly undervalued and it will be interesting to see how Japanese contemporary photography will do in the future.

The object in question is a so-called photogenic drawing showing a leaf. It is made without the help of a camera just by exposing light sensitive paper to sunlight. First thought to be made by Fox Talbot in 1839 it might as well be made in the late 18th century.

It was first auctioned off in 1984 for 776 dollars. But its value has increased continously in the following years to up to 150.000 dollars today. Should it turn out to be really older than expected its value could (and probably will) sky rocket again.

NEW YORK – Christie’s announced five important sales during its Photographs Week at Rockefeller Center this April. With viewings for all sales open to the public from April 4 until April 8, the five distinct sales will present collectors with the finest photographs from many of the 20th century’s most important and influential artists. The combined total for all sales is expected to be in excess of $9.5-14.8 million.

April 10 – Fine Photobooks from an Important – Private Collection This remarkable collection of photobooks is arguably the finest to be offered at auction to date, and is expected to realize $1.5m-2.2 million. Almost without exception, every book in this private collection is distinguished by superb condition and provenance. Indeed most of the books are signed or inscribed by the photographers, linking some of the key figures of 20th-century photography. Highlights include Henri Cartier-Bresson’s The Decisive Moment, New York, 1952, (Estimate: $20,000–30,000) and a first edition of Brassa?’s Paris de nuit, 1933, inscribed to Andre Kertesz (Estimate: $30,000–50,000).

April 10 – Photographs from the Collection of Bruce and Nancy Berman – New York Christie’s has been entrusted with the sale of Photographs from the Collection of Bruce and Nancy Berman to be held across a series of three single-owner auctions. The first part of the collection will be auctioned on April 10 and will offer 51 lots by Diane Arbus. Among the highlights are some of her most iconic photographs including, Boy with a straw hat waiting to march in pro-war parade, NYC, 1967 (Estimate: $25,000-35,000), and Girl in a watch cap, N.Y.C., 1965 (Estimate: $20,000-30,000).

April 10 – Photographs from the Collection of Gert Elfering On April 10 Christie’s will offer Photographs from the Collection of Gert Elfering. This auction continues to reveal a unique eye and sensibility in a carefully curated and beautifully presented catalogue, sure to entice collectors from across the world. The sale will include approximately 140 lots with an overall estimate of $2 to $3 million.

April 11 – Photographs by Ansel – Adams from a California Collection This sale is devoted entirely to the works of Ansel Adams. With 122 lots, the sale includes highlights from throughout Adams’ distinguished career, some prints in mural-size. The collection includes for example, a mural print of Adams’ stunning Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite, 1944 (Estimate: $250,000-350,000).
